As my shop has developed my background becomes more and more apparent. I'm steeped in textiles to my very backbone!
Grandpa was a draper/haberdasher (what a wonderful word) and I still use his sheers and tape measure (when I'm only using inches- he took on the shop aged 18 in 1920 on hisfather's early death). As a small child I adored being there- surrounded by ribbons, Viyella, stockings, thread ...
Not only that BUT my father was silkman. He designed for the jacquard looms in Macclesfield- photos of him are in the Silk Museum there (until quite recently he worked there as a guide and demonstrator).
And me- I was Education Officer at Quarry Bank Mill, a wonderful cotton mill museum owned by NT and ran the fantastic Styal Workshop which brought in makers from all over the world to study contemporary textiles. I reckon I've had a crack at most techniques we covered- patchwork, batik, printing, weaving, spinning, knitting, embroidery, lace...
Colour, texture, design and the history and heritage of fabric and dress is my passion. I hope that can help to feed your's too! |
