| Full or Semi Chisel Chain? The choice between full or semi chisel chain comes down to the type of wood you are cutting. Here’s some info that should help you decide which way to go – |
| | Full chisel chains have square cornered teeth, enabling them to split wood fibres easily in the cut. Thus, full chisel chain lends itself to fast and efficient cutting in cleaner softwood. |
| | Semi-chisel chains however have rounded working corner teeth (formed by a radius between the top and side plates). So while full chisel is faster in cleaner wood, semi chisel chain retains a higher level of cutting sharpness longer, making it the better choice for dirtier, hard or dry wood, and in stump work, all of which would rapidly degrade the sharpness of full chisel chain.
Summary – cleaner conditions, full chisel is recommended as it will be faster and more efficient; but for dirtier, dryer wood, its best to go with semi chisel to get the best out of your chains. |
