| | | | LITTLE NANO-PARTICLES UPDATE
As you already know, I have been investigating the use of nano-particles in cosmetic products for years. Because of their small size 1/5000th the diameter of a human hair they are able to penetrate deep into tissue.
It seems that research into possible negative effects to the body and the environment are in the beginning stages and all kinds of speculations are running the gambit from no harm to potentially devastating.
The problem is that no reporting system for companies using this technology is in place. The idea is that nano- particles of, for instant minerals are still mineral and therefore present little danger. However we do not know what happens if they penetrate tissue or what happens to the environment when those small particles enter the water and therefore the food chain.
Nano-titanium dioxide particles found in cosmetics, sunscreens and other products are added for their highly beneficial effects in blocking ultraviolet light in sunlight- a great benefit in skin cancer protection.
Silver, copper oxide and zinc oxide nano-particles are especially cumbersome as even small amounts in rivers and lakes are toxic to microorganisms that are part of our food chain.
Everybody including drug, cosmetic, food, clothing and packaging companies have jumped on the nano- technology bandwagon and nobody wants to hear anything about caution. We are in the "wild west" of development here.
I will keep up with all of this and I keep questioning my suppliers and manufacturers about their use of this admittingly exiting topic. I think that the benefits for nano-technology, especially in live saving medications are great. But I would use caution in overuse in cosmetic, food and packaging. Let me know what you think about this issue. I have some links to research and articles if you are interested.
