Wheel/Tire Fitment FAQ's - Frequenty Asked Questions

What does a wheels "offset" mean??
Offset is the measurement, normally in millimeters, measured from the centerline of the wheel's barrel to the flat surface that rest on the brakes. Depending on how the wheel is designed, there will be a range of offsets that will fit the same vehicle. See diagram below.

How do measure bolt pattern??
The bolt pattern or bolt circle is the diameter of an imaginary circle formed by the centers of the wheel lugs. Bolt patterns can be 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug holes. A bolt circle of 4x100 would indicate a 4 lug pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm. The diagram indicates the proper measuring methods. 6 lug wheels are measured like the 4 lug wheels.

Will installing larger wheels affect my speedometer??
In short, not if the correct size tires are used. For example, when going from a 14 inch wheel to a 17 inch wheel, the wheel will get larger, the the tire's sidewall will get shorter, thus keeping the same overall diameter. When the overall diameter stays the same, or is very close, your speedometer will not be affected. The below diagram shows this "plus sizing" situation.

What size tire do I have?? How to read your tire's sidewall.
From the example shown in the diagram below, the tire size is 225/50/R16. The "225" is the width of the tread in millimeters. The "50" is an aspect ratio to the first digit, which used in a complicated formula, determines the height of the sidewall. The last digit, "16", is the size of your wheel, the example would use a 16 inch wheel. 16 inch tires only fit 16 inch wheels. The diagram below shows other tire markings as well.
