Disney Big Figs are affordable ways of bringing home your favorite Disney character and they make great collectibles too. These large statues, known as Big Figs, are large figurines ranging from 18" to 28" tall and often feature many of your favorite Disney characters. They are made of a hard resin material and most often hand painted.

The Who's Who of Disney Big Figs

Disney characters who have been included in the Big Fig family range from the most popular to the most unique. Of course, there's the Fab Five - Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto.

Another popular series are the characters from Nightmare Before Christmas, including Jack Skellington, Sally and Oogie Boogie.

I'm also amazed at the popularity of some of the unusual characters. For example, when Walt Disney World in Florida closed the attraction Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, they produced a Mr. Toad Big Fig that came with a certificate of authentification. Years later they showed up at Disneyland in Anaheim without the certificate. My personal favorites have been these unusual big figs.

Mickey Mouse has had a special place in the collection of Big Figs. He is featured in the most big figs and in the most diverse styles too. My favorite is his Jedi Mickey.

The Artistry of Big Figs

In the beginning the Walt Disney company just began producing these pieces on their own. Today, many of today's most popular figurine artists have been getting involved in Big Fig creations. The most recent is Jim Shore produced a wonderful Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey Mouse and the first Grumpy Big Fig.

The Licensing of Big Figs

There's no confirmed story on this one. But Disneyland began producing big figs based on the lands at Disneyland. They started with Fantasyland and soon came out with Tomorrowland and Adventureland. One day, I went to Disneyland to purchase Adventureland and it was gone. Then I noticed that Tomorrowland was gone. When I asked a Cast Member where it was they told me that they had to immediately pull it off the shelf. No reason, they didn't run out. They just pulled it. My guess is that George Lucas was a little miffed that these pieces featured the Star Tours attraction from Star Wars and Indiana Jones and the Forbidden Eye. Basically, Lucas wasn't getting his cut.
