Sow outdoors in mid spring in a well prepared seed bed. Soak the seeds for 48 hours in warm water before sowing 5cm (2in) deep, 8cm (3in) apart in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Germination is slow. Seeds can also be started off under glass.

Jan-April

Sow January to April for growing under glass, March to April for planting outdoors, in pots of moist seed compost and cover with a 6mm (¼ inch) layer of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of between 20-25C (68-77F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 10-14 days.

For an early crop sow seeds in heat in March-April roughly 6 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow individually in 7.5cm (3in) pots at 18-21C (65-70F). Otherwise sow seeds outdoors in succession from mid April to mid July after all danger of frost. Sensitive to low soil temperatures, so delay sowing until the soil has warmed up. Sow seeds 7.5cm (3in) apart in rows 5cm (2in) deep and 45cm (18in) apart.

May-Jul

Sow seeds March-August for 'salad leaves' or March-June for mature plants.

Sow seeds thinly in a well-prepared seedbed, 12mm (½in) deep in drills 23cm (9in) apart. Plants can be left unthinned for 'salad leaves'. Ideally fleece against caterpillars and aphids.

For mature Kale, Sow seeds into individual pots or a seed tray of a proprietary compost and cover with 6mm (¼in) of compost or vermiculite, at a minimum of 15C ( 60F), until germination which takes around 7 days. Alternatively, can be sown thinly in a prepared seedbed 13mm (½in) deep, allowing 30cm (12in) between rows.

Can also be sown in pots or trays indoors for 'salad leaves' all the year round. Harvest in 30 days from sowing during summer and up to 60 days during winter months.
