Herb Growing Guide

Angelica- is best grown in a light shady area of your herb garden. When planted in full sun, take care to add mulch to the soil around the plant. Make sure that the soil is moist and deep. Sow angelica in early autumn where it is to grow.

Basil- needs a sunny location which receives at least 6-8 hours of bright light per day and moist but well drained soil conditions. Protect from heavy wind, frost and scorching. It does not do well with blaring midday sun. Sow seeds thinly in a warm location in pots or directly in the soil after danger of frost has passed. Sow evenly, covering with 1/4" of soil and keep moist and free of weeds.

Calendula- like rich, well drained soil, but are very tolerant of average to slightly poor soils. Improving your soil quality will produce much healthier plants and flowers, so add plenty of compost. Add a general purpose fertilizer once a month. Sow seeds in March and cover lightly with 1/4" of garden soil

Chives- thrive in full sun and well drained moist soil rich in organic matter. They tolerate light shade, but 6 - 8 hours of direct light is best. Sow seeds in March and lightly cover with soil.

Coriander- thrives in damp, cool springs and hot, dry summers. It requires mostly sunshine but can be grown in morning sun and shade in the hot afternoon. Choose a site where soil is well-drained and amended with plenty of compost. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep after all danger of frost has passed.

Dill- likes well drained and rich soil with full sun and afternoon shade. Sow the seeds in April where the plants are to grow and thin to 12 inches apart.

Greek Cress- sow in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow thickly 1/4 inch deep.

Lemon Grass- sow in full sun in rich, well-draining soil in containers. Lemon Grass is invasive and should be overwintered in a cool greenhouse or light airy shed.

Sweet cicely- likes a soil that is rich and on the moist side. It also needs a shaded location. Sow seed in the late autumn in pots outdoors. It needs cold weather to germinate. Once germinated plant out where it will grow.

Thyme- plant in full sun with good drainage for flavour and good growth. Sow seed from late May to July and plant into final position when big enough to handle.
