Companion Planting-
Companion planting, is an essential part of organic fruit and vegetable growing. Below is a list of beneficial companion plants and their uses, and they can also be purchased in our Ebay shop.
Calendula- Repels whitefly, tomato worm, and asparagus beetle.
Chives- Plant between the rows of carrots to repel carrotfly, or place pots of chives at intervals along the rows. Chives will also prevent aphid attacks on raspberries and roses. Gently squeeze the leaves of the chives to release their pungent vapour.
Coriander- Repels aphids from all vegetables. A thin sowing of Coriander between the vegetable rows will greatly reduce the attack of greenfly, blackfly, and whitefly. Coriander can also be sown into pots and kept in a shaded area of your greenhouse to protect tomatoes, cucumbers, and aubergines. Coriander also attracts bees to aid the pollination of your plants.
Hyssop- Place pots of hysopp around your cabbages and other brassicas to repel the cabbage white butterfly.
Marigold/Tagetes- Repel aphids and nematodes.
Mint- Repels cabbage white butterfly and aphids. Mint is very invasive so keep it in a pot to contain its roots.
Nasturtium- Repels blackfly and pumpkin/squash beetles.
Yarrow(Achillia Milefolium)- Attracts hoverflies that feed on aphids

Garlic Water- Use to repel all aphids and Cabbage White Butterfly
Take 8 cloves of garlic and bash to a very smooth paste
Take one 2 ltr plastic bottle and spoon the crushed smooth garlic into the bottle
Fill the bottle up with clean tap water, shake vigourously, and leave to rest for two days
Take a sponge "I use the cheap scouring variety" and soak in the garlic water
Push the sponge onto a garden cane and position amongst your vegetable or fruit plants
I use one sponge per 8ft row and re-soak the sponge weekly. Shake the bottle before each use.
