There are over 400 Belgian beers produced in Belgium. The two main regions where they are produced are the Flemish and Wallonia regions. The Flemish region is in the north of Belgium and the language spoken is nearly identical to Dutch. The Wallonian region is found in the south of Belgium and here French is the spoken language. These two regions are where nearly all the Belgian beers are produced. To identify the different beers they have an individual logo and glass. The glasses are very important not only for the identification of the beer brand but also for enhancing the flavour of the beer. By shaping the glass in different ways, the brewer can change the taste and characteristics of the beer. Therefore each Belgian beer glass shape is chosen to enhance and supplement the flavour of the beer. The 3 main shapes that are used for Belgian beer glasses are:
THE GOBLET:
This style of glass has a narrow bottom and wider top to reduce the foaming effect of the beer and it allows the drinker to inhale the flavour at the same time as drinking. The Chimay glass on the left is a typical example of this type of glass. |
