Our high tech tools are simple to use and have exceeded expectations. Our personal experience in servicing two-cylinder John Deere tractors goes back to the old technology in 1951. We now use the newer technology in engineering and design work.
Creation
The grille screens on my 50, 80, 520, 620 and 4430 had bends and dents that were an eye sore. Also, my neighbor’s two 4020 tractors had the same problem. It motivated me to machine re-forming tools for both tractor generations. I learned that the geometry on the New Generation tractors had different angles and radii, which resulted in the necessity for two different sets. The tools worked so well, and I was so satisfied with the results that I was motivated to survey the market potential. I talked to other John Deere hobbyists, parts dealers, implement dealers and farmers to see if they would be interested in buying the tools. The encouragement was there to go for it! My past career experience and family support were a plus.
Life and Career Experience
My first job was working in my dad’s John Deere dealership in the 50’s and 60’s at Litchfield, Minnesota. After the business was sold, I became an Industrial Technology teacher. In the 1980s, I worked as a machinist, mechanical engineer, and quality control technician. In the 90s my first retirement was from teaching vocational tool and die making.
Family and Friends’ Support
Our son Thad is a tool and die maker. Using his high-tech experience, he perfected the final engineering and design work for an efficient aluminum extrusion process. My wife Elaine is an organizer and runs the computer. She is coordinating the business and website. Input and contact with relatives and friends fit into this whole structure. It wouldn’t be possible without them. We do this for personal satisfaction and as a hobby. Also, it provides great friendships throughout the country and abroad. We enjoy operating a credible business with the latest technology.
Marketing and 'Spreading the Word'
Advertising has been done through communication with advertisers, tractor clubs, and tractor and parts dealers. Brochures describing the tools are being mailed throughout the country. A web site has been set up. Demonstrations are frequently done and a video has been made. Input from others on the quality of the tools is always appreciated. Also, any ideas on other restorations tools are requested.
We have more recently developed an Airloc cross pin tool, a clutch pivot pin removel tool and a riveting tool for tubular rivets on pulley brake linings. In addition to our field tractor tools, we are now marketing two lawn and garden tractor grille tools and mower deck repair patches.
We have the capability to produce additional restoration tools. We are currently researching and testing new tools that will be ready soon. Patents are pending on all tools.
