I began learning to cook a year ago and have found that the spices contained in the powdered package are the most frequently used.  I also bought myself a book called Hansa's Indian Vegetarian Cookbook. I recommend this book if you want to create some really authentic dishes. You should be able to order it from your nearest large bookshop for £12.95. However, I also stock some great books which i buy directly from India.
