Bath Bomb Making Guide

Making your own Bath Bomb is the new hobby every one is trying. Maybe because Bath bombs seem to be getting more expensive or because making them is so much fun, not only that, but I don't know anyone who hasn't been thrilled to receive a gift set of handmade bath bombs in their favourite fragrances, made especially for them. And they really are easy to make, just mix the basic mixture with oil or water, add your fragrances and colours and then mould them in your desired shape.

Bath Bomb Recipe

YOU WILL NEED

1)    An Estheticals Kit

2)  A large mixing bowl

3)  Kitchen scales (if you intend to keep some mixture for later)

4)  Some space to leave the bombs to set.

HOW TO MAKE THEM

·         MIX THE BASIC INGREDIENTS - Put the bicarbonate of soda and the citric acid into the mixing bowl. You might need to sieve or break the mixture up if it’s in lumps. Mix together until you have a consistent texture.

·         IF MAKING VARIOUS COLOURS OR FRAGRANCES - You will need more than one bowl and should divide the mixture now.

·         ADD THE COLOURING – If you’re using liquid colour you will just need a few drops – you need to mix it in quickly to prevent the bomb fizzing. If you’re using a powdered colour simply add a PINCH at a time, until you have your desired colour (a little goes a long way and as the colour gets wet it will deepen considerably - I advise you use the handle of a teaspoon to pick up just a little of the coloured powder).

·         ADD THE FRAGRANCE – Add just a few drops of essential oil or a little more if using fragrance oil. Most essential or fragrance oils will not cause the mixture to fizz, but certain citrus oils may, so if this happens, mix in quickly and thoroughly.

·         pLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN.

·         Do not leave the mixture to stand or it will slowly start to set.

·         MIXING THE BOMB MIXTURE - A little at a time and working the mixture all the time, spray a little water on it with the hand sprayer. Mix continuously to avoid it fizzing-up in the bowl. Alternatively you can use a carrier oil - such as almond oil (be careful about anyone who might be sensitive to nut products) or Olive Oil.

·         ONLY ADD ENOUGH WATER TO MAKE THE MIXTURE HOLD TOGETHER WHEN  SQUEEZED IN YOUR HAND.

·         Taking the moulds, fill each half with mixture (a little more than full). Press the two halves together firmly, wait a few seconds (maybe count to 15) then very gently remove one half of the mould. Set the bomb on a dry clean surface and remove the other half of the mould. They usually come out easily but sometimes they need a tiny tap to release them. Be gentle with them at this stage, they are very fragile until they have hardened (about an hour, maybe 2).

·         ADDING PETALS ETC – You can put a small amount of petals in one half of the mould before filling it with mixture. This will ensure that the flowers are seen when you wrap the bombs.

·         DIRECTIONS FOR USE – Drop the bomb into the bath as you are running your water. Bath bombs have the effect of softening the water.

IDEAS FOR MAKING BATH BOMBS

TWO-TONE BOMBS

You can make very cool two-tone bombs by dividing the mixture into 2 bowls, colouring them with different colour powders then use as little or as much of each colour to pack the mould. This is especially great if you fragrance each colour with a different scent.

ADDING PETALS OR HERBS

Put a small amount of petals or herbs in the mould then pack the mixture on top of the petals or Buds (fairly tightly).

Alternatively you can add petals or herbs to the mixture - mix them in well and then mould the bombs as you normally would.

* Add them after you have spritzed

SPECKLED OR 'BLUSHED' BOMBS

You can achieve a speckled effect by adding the colour powder after you have spritzed the mixture - this gives the powder less time to absorb the water. Or you can put slightly moist colour powder in to the mould to acheive a 'blush' to the bomb - You then simply mould the bomb as you normally would.

DO'S AND DON'T'S

·     Don't be tempted to leave the bombs in the moulds - it's really not necessary. If you find the bombs are going flat on the bottom or becoming mis-shapen then you've probably added too much water or oil. Take it out the mould and mix a bit more sodium in and try again.

·     The mixture doesn't need a lot of liquid to make it set - so don't be tempted to add lots.

·     Do leave them to dry out in a safe place and don't be tempted to 'fiddle' with them - they'll set in their own time and you risk breaking them apart until they have set.

·     Don't be tempted to add too much fragrance - some people are sensitive to fragrance.

·     If you're using oil instead of water - please be careful which oil you use, as nut based oils can provoke an allergic reaction in people with nut allergies (Sweet Almond Oil is an example of this).
