Nearly 50% of Secondhand New with tags clothing is MIS-SIZED!
According to statistics, most people shopping in clothing stores take the time to try it on before they buy it, even though it's tagged the size they normally wear - or the size they buy most frequently. Why? To make sure it fits properly.
Since you can't do that in a virtual store, we take the time to measure every clothing item we list, in the most common areas necessary to ensure fit.
Just because it's marked/tagged a size Large, doesn't mean it is. Most Vintage clothing tagged a size large is not. Please go by the measurements! They are quick research in your investment! We will try to help you along the way and will frequently note how an item fits others that have near the same measurements and what size they normally wear.
TIP: When you see any listing on ebay that says it will fit a large and the bust measurement is um.. lets say 40" - good luck with that - it won't fit most larges. (A great way to learn about sizing is to buy or look at sewing patterns at your nearest walmart or fabric store - they always provide measurements and it's the closest guide to an industry standard that there is.)
WE WANT IT TO FIT GREAT!
WE WANT YOU TO BE OVERJOYED WITH YOUR PURCHASE!
We have a combined 80+ years experience and knowledge of dressmaking skills among the 3 women in our office who do the measurements and listings. Our manager owned a custom to commercial clothing company and is a certified bra fitter (required to fit breast prosthesis for mastectomy patients.) We can help you measure properly or provide additional measurements if you need them to ensure fit.
For best fit you should measure a similar type clothing item that you already comfortably wear and compare those measurements to the measurements in our listings.
FOR EXAMPLE:
If your favorite nightgown measures 22" from underarm seam to underarm seam you take that number X 2 which is 44". This measurement is commonly referred to as the "bust" measurement although it is not the true bust - it's a pretty good indicator.
If the "bust" measurement of a nightgown you just "gotta have" is listed as 44", then this will probably fit with consideration of fabric. If both fabrics are nylon they have some stretch and it should be great. If your favorite nightgown is nylon, but your "gotta have" nightgown is silk or rayon with no stretch - you may have a problem. These fabrics don't give or stretch so you would need more room for ease of movement.
In some cases we have automatically taken 2" off (lowered the measurements listed by 2") because the fabric or design of a garment calls for more room or give. This is done so we can ensure that it will fit the measurements listed without pulling funny or fitting weird. So in some cases, actual measurements may be higher than the measurements in the listing. .
Most of our measurements are taken laying the garment down and measuring from side seam to side seam in these areas as they apply and then that measurement is taken X 2:
Upper Bust
Bust
Empire Waist/Underbust
Waist
Hips
Length Measurements are taken in the same way in these areas:
Underarm seam to cuff - for sleeve length measurements
Shoulder seam to cuff - for sleeve length measurements
Shoulder seam at the neckline to bottom hem straight down
The size listed in titles are generally for search purposes so that the proper size people find the proper size item. This is why you will see titles that have S M or M L. However, you still need to check the measurements to ensure fit as all mediums do not have a 40" bust.
After measuring thousands of items we have found that the bust measurement on most garments fall within the range below. This is to help those who think that bra size means bust measurement. It does not.) Remember: if you like things to fit loose then you want to allow more than 1" - 2" between your measurements and ours, and if you prefer it to be more form fitting, then you can usually get away with subtracting an inch. Fabrics vary so how much stretch the fabric has will also affect this. Based on years of general measurements and sizing experience, we will never list an item to fit a size larger than what the measurements below will fit. I.E. A large size must always accommodate a 44" bust meaning the bust measurement on a garment must always be at least 46" before we will tell you it will fit a large.
Size Garment usually measures: Your Measurement must be equal to or less than:
S <38" 36"
M <42" 40"
L <46" 44"
XL <50" 48"
We frequently help our return ebayers with their measurements and fit BEFORE they purchase an item. If you have any doubt about your measurements - take them, it's easy. If you have any doubt about fit - ebay message us, we're always happy to help. If you need assistance or have questions please use the "ask seller a question" link at the bottom of the item listing.
Have a lovely day.
