Ronnies Rough Guide to Air Rifle Pellet Buying
I want to start by saying that there are no "right" or "wrong" pellets for your airgun / air rifle. Correct air rifle pellet selection is a matter of trial and error to finding the pellet that works best in your air rifle in the situation you need it for. That may be target shooting or hunting and long or short range this is because every air rifle will fire every pellet differently. But for a general rule of thumb .22 light weight air rifle pellets 12-15gr for short range up to about 20 to 30 metres and .22 heavy air rifle pellet 16-21gr for longer range 30 metres and up.
So I always suggest that you try a number of different pellets and shoot each one from a bench rest or Bipod to determine its accuracy in your airgun you'll will be amazed at the results.
Below is a general description of the various pellet shapes, but you will also find that pellet designs will cross over into one another.
FLATHEAD (WADCUTTER): Flathead air rifle pellets are popular for target shooting as they punch the target with a clean hole making it easier to work out your score they also have a very efficient flight characteristic. They can also be a very effective hard hitting short range vermin control pellet. And the 177 are well suited for use in C02 powered pistols as they do not protrude from the magazine. POINTED: Pointed air rifle pellets are designed for hunting and they can very accurate over longer distances. Most pointed pellets will have the advantage of twin rings around the rim which will help to improve barrel air seal and pellet velocity .177 Jet Pointed, .22 Jet Pointed or .22 Bisley Premier Pointed pellets for examples of pointed pellets that you will find in my Ebay shop.
DOMED / ROUND NOSE: Mostly used as a general all round air rifle pellet, great for target plinking or field use and can be found in a variety of variations and quality with some models designed for a specific use, most will be a heavy weight hard hitting long range pellet. HOLLOW POINT: The hollow point pellet was development out of the need for a reliable, expanding pellet that assures a one-shot kill without over penetration at shorter range. The shape of the pellet also provides the efficient flight characteristics of the Flathead combining increased mass and knock down power.
