After nearly twenty years in a corporate software sales career, I decided it was time to do something that I loved. As a kid, growing up in New England in the late 50s and through the 60s I loved baseball and baseball cards. Like most, I had a collection, with all the greats Williams, Mantle, Mays, Koufax, Aaron. Througth the years, like most, the cards were lost or destroyed. When I had a son of my own, I had a great excuse to dive back into collecting again as something to share with my son, Jordan. Now he is living his dream as a pitcher in the Detroit Tiger's organization, and I am pursuing mine of owning a card shop. I would trade my dream for his in a heartbeat, but alas, I do not possess a 95 mph fastball.

07/29/2007 By Jason Beck / MLB.com Tigers add Tata to Roster ANAHEIM -- With less than 48 hours left before the non-waiver trading deadline, the Tigers made the kind of pitching move they neither wanted nor planned to make. Instead of starting Monday's series opener at Oakland, Kenny Rogers is going on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation. At this point, manager Jim Leyland was hoping his veteran lefty won't have to miss more than the minimum time. But since the move came up suddenly, the Tigers are still sizing up their situation and can't be sure. It's the second trip to the DL for Rogers, but the latest move has nothing to do with the surgery he had in March to repair arteries in his throwing shoulder. He lost nearly three months to the earlier procedure but looked effective once he came back, with wins in his first three outings leading into the All-Star break. Since then, however, Rogers has struggled in his last three starts, the most recent being a four-inning performance with seven runs allowed Wednesday at Chicago. Opponents are batting .309 against him since the break, compared to .206 before, and he has surrendered five home runs over 15 1/3 innings. "I was a little suspicious," Leyland said. "[Pitching coach] Chuck [Hernandez] and I both were. Kenny's a tough guy. He obviously wants to try to help the team." Right-hander Jordan Tata was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace Rogers on the roster, as well as in Monday's start. The move won't be officially made until Monday. Tata was scheduled to start Monday for the Mud Hens. Instead, he spent Sunday night flying out to the Bay Area. Like Rogers, Tata is winless in three starts since the All-Star break, but his performances have been better than the results. That includes his most recent outing, eight innings of one-run ball with no walks and five strikeouts Tuesday against Pawtucket. Tata began last season in Detroit's bullpen as an injury replacement but has been starting for Toledo ever since. After missing the first month and a half of this season with shoulder problems, the 25-year-old right-hander owns a 3-3 record with a 3.29 ERA in 11 starts. Opponents are batting just .229 against him with seven home runs over 63 innings. .

Tata is winless in three starts for the Mud Hens since the Triple-A All-Star break, but two of those outings have been solid, including eight innings with one earned run allowed in his last start that ended up with no decision. The 26-year-old right-hander opened last season as an injury replacement in Detroit's bullpen, but began this year on the DL himself.
