This type of model is new to the UK although uses techniques commonplace in the US. The kits combine creative design and attention to detail with the ease of construction and accuracy of laser cut components.

The kits use materials from a variety of sources including a number of custom made resin and whitemetal detail parts but predominantly use easy to handle sections of birch plywood. These are typically cut from 0.5mm or 0.3mm thick plywood sheets that are composed of several layers of veneer glued at opposing directions of grain. This provides excellent strength, resistance to moisture and temperature variations and allows the models a more ‘delicate’ finish than those made of thicker materials. The models are designed on a computer drawing package and the pieces are grouped together on ‘laser sheets’ the wood is cut using a very fine laser beam (approximately 0.003mm) and very fine ‘tags’ are left to hold the pieces in place. This cutting technique allows for much more precise and complex designs than can be achieved using more traditional die-cutting methods. The laser takes its instructions directly from the computer files allowing faithful reproduction of the intricate designs every time. Surface detail, for example planking grooves or nail holes, are applied by reducing the power of the laser. Windows and doors are typically cut from the thinner sheets and have a self stick adhesive applied to the back for easier assembly. The windows are typically cut in three separate pieces (frame, upper and lower panes) to allow them to be modelled open or closed. Window glazing and roofing materials are also included.

Construction is made easy and accurate through the use of tab and slot techniques and etched lines are used to indicate the precise position of layered pieces.

The instructions include a copy of all the ‘laser sheets’ used in the model which have the parts labelled allowing you to identify each piece easily and quickly. They also have a full set of elevation drawings. They adopt a step by step approach (with many including ‘in progress’ photos) and include tips on how best to glue and paint the model.

The models are glued together using white pva glue which dries clear and allows parts to be painted before assembly if you so wish.
