| | Oakita Oak furniture care and general information:
This has been written for your guidance and general knowledge regarding your new furniture.
Wood is hygroscopic. This means that it absorbs moisture & therefore changes according to its surrounding humidity. Naturally occurring changes are impossible to guarantee against.
All of our Oak furniture is classed as rustic unless otherwise stated and this in very general terms, means basic. It is well built, new solid furniture with many of the characteristics of much older traditional furniture. Most of the tree is used and you can expect to see knots, the use of filler, minor dents, minor separations, colour variations, end grain cracks and splits. These are all part of the character of rustic Oak and are unavoidable in a 100% natural product. They are in no way a fault.
Unless stated otherwise, the finish is a natural wax lacquer to enhance the timber and offer some protection from spills. It is not a 'mirror' finish and it may be possible to see the natural undulations of the timbers, knots, fillers or 'duller spots'.
Day to day cleaning requires nothing more than a clean damp cloth. Perhaps once a month or so, the surfaces can be nourished a little with general furniture wax polish.
Over a longer period of time some of the wax is absorbed by the timber, as well as being wiped away during general cleaning.
If you feel the timber is looking dull, it may be time to give it a full application of furniture wax.
A natural, clear furniture wax paste is best and this may be required every one to two years.
General care and maintenance.
NEVER lift an extension table by its extension(s). By their nature extension tables have moving extensions which are held in place by guides and runners. These are not designed to support the weight of the lifted table. ALWAYS LIFT AN EXTENSION TABLE BY THE MAIN TABLE APRON WHERE THE LEGS ATTACH.
Our Provence and Oxford tables are panel designs. Solid Oak panels are positioned in a solid Oak frame to form the table upper and produce the attractive designs. The joints have the added benefit of producing natural expansion and contraction channels for the Oak. All solid timber will move slightly and without expansion /contraction channels it can produce splits and cracks in the panels themselves. This means cracks/gaps in the channels along the expansion/contraction areas will occur and are perfectly normal and therefore again are not a fault and so are not guaranteed against.
The cracks can just be left as they are perfectly normal - displaying the Oak as behaving correctly according to its environment. They will close when the surrounding air humidity rises sufficiently. It is easily possible to raise humidity levels if you live in a very dry house. This can be done by the introduction of a humidifier, by lowering the central heating, or by the introduction of regularly watered house plants. Drying washing on radiators & opening windows will also have an impact.
In permanently very dry houses you have the option to purchase a flexible Oak coloured timber filler from your local DIY merchant to fill cracks that don’t close even in the more humid Summer months.
Ascot table, Modena table & Nirvana table:
These tables are strip design without surface channels. The expansion /contraction areas are engineered into the underside of the table upper so there will be little or no surface change in the early months after arrival. Small cracks and splits however will still occur and are normal.
All of these elements are what sets aside solid wood furniture from cheap, veneered products. We hope that you enjoy the qualities & pleasure in our solid Oak furniture for a very long time.
Very best wishes, Teakita Ltd. |
