It is easy to confuse the focal length with the filter size. ie 18-55mm 400mm, 50mm, 55-300mm etc are the focal lengths.
These numbers are completely unrelated to filter size.
There are 3 ways to determine filter size.
1. Look on the back of the lens cap, and the size is usually right there. 
2. Look on the front of the lens for this symbol Ø

3. Lastly you can always measure the filter ring.
