What's Coming in November 2009
The Machine
Caterpillar introduced the earth moving world to the
future a year ago with the announcement of their revolutionary D7E electric
drive track-type tractor. This all new machine is the descendant of a long
line of mid-sized dozers that have carried the D7 model designator since they
were added to the Cat line in 1938.
Separating the D7E from its competition and predecessors
is its hybrid-electric drive train which reduces fuel consumption by 10 to 30%
while improving the speed and power to ground efficiency rating by 10%.When
combined, these increases result in an astounding 25% improvement in the
material moved per gallon of fuel burned.
In addition to this unheard of increase in efficiency,
the reliability and uptime for the machine have been significantly improved when
compared to the conventional drive systems. In addition to a sixty percent
reduction in the number of moving parts in the electric drive power train the
new design utilizes components that offer up to 50% longer life. Even
change intervals on hydraulic oil and filters has been increased by a factor of
two and the power train oil and filters by an astounding factor of
four.
While this machine deserves praise for its environmental
benefits it also deserves recognition for the way it will lower operating costs
and improve productivity in the construction community.
