Those who read the blog on a regular basis know that I’ve been on a kick for getting a hold of all the classic gaming systems and I’ve been all over the place looking for a rather large selection of them. I’ve been to Schaumburg and some places closer to the city, but none stock a large assortment of classic games and if they do its mostly copies of every Madden game in existence. Not too fun if your not a fan of Madden games.
On a trip to Gurnee Mills Mall, I asked one of the game clerks at a Gamestop if he knew of anywhere that sold classic games and he said “Not around here bud, but if you know where Volo is there is a shop that just sells the classic.” Intrigued, but not quite sure where Volo was I replied “What is the name of the shop?” to which responded that he had no idea. Somewhat frustrated, I finished doing some shopping in the mall and drove home down RT.120 thinking about this shop and where the hell Volo is. My question was shortly answered as I drove by the Volo Auto Museum, a place I’ve driven by it least 500 times but never really put the connection together that it was in fact the city of Volo.
Volo isn’t exactly the hippest place to be and if you do a search on the city, many blogs tell of the impending boredom that you get when going to the military museum as well as the auto shows there. So when I saw a blog post about a mercantile mall that featured tons of “antique” items and classic gaming was one of the things listed on them, I didn’t expect very much. Another thing that left me less then hopeful was a blogger’s comment on the video games section, calling it “A place for the kiddies that sells overpriced Game Boy games.”
Being that Volo is only 10 minutes away, I decided that I really didn’t have much to lose, and if it sucked; it sucked. I’d never have to go back and I could spread the word that if the place in fact only carried Game Boy games and to tell people to stray away if you were looking for something else. Upon my arrival though and entering the video game shop, my expectations of this place were completely blown away and my jaw dropped on the floor.
You want NES games? They have TONS of them. Genesis? Master System? That too! How about Dreamcast, NEO GEO, Playstation 1, Sega Saturn, 3D0, Sega CD, Jaguar, Game Gear, Atari, Intellivision and Commodore 64? If its classic video gaming, this shop has it and then some. All of the games and systems are in prime condition and guaranteed! If there’s a problem, come back and they’ll get you taken care of without any issue. Moe’s Classic Video Game Store is the name of the store and it rocks!
Prices range depending on how rare the games are, for example a copy of Final Fantasy 3 for SNES may run you about 70 bucks, sealed in the box , while a open copy may run for 40. PS1 games range from 5.99 to 79.99 depending on how rare they are. The actually had a copy of I.Q. which is a super rare and super sought after game for the PS1 for $79.99. People may ague that you would be able to get a lot of these games cheaper on eBay and to a certain stance, I agree. However, I’ve received many games from eBay recently and alot of them are in bad shape. The labels are peeling off, or they smell like B.O. Or it looks like the games were never cleaned and your shocked they even work. At this shop, you know what your getting has been cleaned and tested and if there is an issue with it, you can exchange it easily. There are some games I wish I would of paid the extra few bucks for at this shop had I known about it sooner.
Bob, the owner of the shop is one of the nicest and funniest guys I’ve talked to in along time. He’s an older gentlemen who use to run many pawn shops in the city and one day got interested in the video game business when he started seeing the popularity of them. Bob is retired now and basically runs the shop just to keep himself busy and so he can interact with people. He’s an honest guy and it hard to walk out of the shop not smiling, its also hard to walk out empty handed with all the great classics sitting around.
Today was my 5th visit to the shop and I had Bob help me out with a bunk Dreamcast that I got a hold of. After getting me taken care of, I noticed that it was totally pouring rain outside and I didn’t really feel like getting soaked. One thing lead to another and I actually ended up helping Bob reorganize some of his shelves. I thought that was pretty cool! He even hooked me up with some Dreamcast stuff for helping him out! Below you’ll see the newly arranged shelf of SNES games by yours truly.

Overall, I gave the shop 5 out of 5 stars! Its the perfect place to go if you live in the Northern Illinois area. In fact its one of the only places around here in the immediate area!
