Low Bay Lighting Help
Low bay light fittings should be used in areas where the mounting height is between 4-8 metres above the ground, with an optimum mounting height of 6 metres. These types of light fittings have traditionally been HID (High Intensity Discharge) but now modern high output fluorescent lamp versions are also available.
HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LOW BAYS
High intensity discharge lamps are used for low bays due to the high light output, energy efficiency and their long life properties. Some discharge lamps have an expected lamp life of 26,000 hours. HID lamps require a “warm up” period of usually around 5 minutes to achieve full brightness. They are also best suited to long periods of use as they have a “re-strike” period meaning they cannot be used for up to 10-15 minutes after being switched off. This is due to the lamps requiring time to “warm up” again after even a momentary power disruption.
What type lamp for which task?
SODIUM (SON) LAMPS
Sodium lamps produce a yellow-orange light similar to street lighting. These lamps are best suited to large storage areas or agricultural use where light is required, but true colour light is not as important. SON lamps offer a higher light output to lamp wattage than other types of discharge lighting, so fewer SON low bay fittings may be used to achieve required light levels.
METAL HALIDE (HQI) LAMPS
Metal Halide lamps produce a crisp white light that offers clarity and a high light output. This makes them the ideal choice for assembly, bench and machinery work or for any application where true colours are required. If you require a purer light with less glare then use a diffused elliptical lamp rather than the standard clear tubular.
MERCURY VAPOUR (MBF) LAMPS
Mercury vapour lamps are ideal for applications where a very reliable lamp is required. They burn with a pleasant white light that's comparable to a standard fluorescent tube – not as crisp as Metal Halide but not amber like sodium lamps. These lamps are often found in large retail outlets or similar environments where a long life, low cost and reliable lamp is necessary.
FLUORESCENT LOW BAYS (FLO-BAYS)
The fluorescent low bay light or “flo-bay” is fast gaining popularity over the traditional HID type. The main benefits are instant start, cooler running and excellent energy efficiency. In addition, the Opti-lux range of fluorescent low bay lights has been approved by The Carbon Trust. These fittings are suitable for most applications including machinery work due to the High Frequency control gear which minimises the strobe effect traditionally associated with fluorescent lighting. All flo-bay lights also have the option of emergency lighting modules enabling one lamp to remain on for up to 3 hours in the event of power failure, making them ideal for use on designated escape routes. |
