  Protected Leather

Protected leather is hard wearing and most common type of leather. If you add a drop of water to the surface it will not soak in and simply make the surface shiny. If the leather is already shiny this is protected and the shine is normally caused by dirt sitting on the surface.

   Nubuck Leather

Nubuck is very much like suede. If you run your finger across the surface in a zig zag stroke you will see it change colour. You will also find with Nubuck that if you add a drop of water it will soak in and turn dark.

   Aniline Leather

Aniline Leather is very soft to touch and absorbs water as shown in the picture. Aniline does not have a protective layer on top so if you get a stain on it, you should try to wash it off as soon as possible otherwise it may soak deep into the fibers and become permanent.

   Suede

Suede is a type of leather that is used a lot on shoes. It's less durable than other types and can have a smooth or rough texture. The best way to tell would be to check the label as most products that use suede would mention it, but if not you can tell by the fact its smooth to touch and has a course velvet surface, which changes colour when running your finger over it.

   Faux Leather

Faux leather is essentially fake leather. Instead of being made of animal skins, these fabrics are made of other materials to replicate the look of leather such as PVC & Polyester. The best way to tell thats its not real leather is to fold it in half then make an 'S' shape out of it, then try to strech it. If it stretches easily and visibly gets thinner its faux leather. Real leather will only strech very slightly and becuase it doesn't strech it remains quite thick.

   Vinyl

Vinyl is much like protected leather but looks more like plastic. If you push your finger directly into it, you should see the vinyl bending inwards like a plastic sheet. If it was protected leather it would be a lot softer and you would see lots of creases around the point where you are applying pressure.
