DVD Regions - What They Are & How To Work Around Them!
When DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) was created it was decided to produce artificial regions. The code on the discs and in the DVD players prevents DVDs from a different region being played on the player. This enables movie production companies to release their DVDs at different times in different places and also to charge different prices!
The Regions are:
Region 1 = USA, Canada Region 2 = Europe, Japan Region 3 = Southeast Asia, East Asia Region 4 = Australia, New Zealand, Central America, Mexico, South America, Caribbean Region 6 = China

To play a Region 1 DVD you will need a Region 1 or MultiRegion DVD player.
Standard UK players are Region 2, which would not play a Region 1 DVD. However, many people have a 'Multiregion' DVD player, which can play DVDs from anywhere.
If you bought your player in a UK high street store, it is probably Region 2 - if you had bought a multiregion player, you would probably know you had, as the salesperson would have given you the spiel about regions. If you have a look round the back of it, there may be a number giving the region.

In most cases it is possible to convert a 'Region 2' player to being 'Multiregion' by programming a specific sequence from your remote control - the sequences for each model are widely available on the Internet & I did this myself on the Phillips model I bought for £30 from Asda: just do a search on the make & model number, or you could try: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/
It's worth having a look, as Region 1 DVDs tend to be cheaper than Region 2 & often have better 'extras'. New titles may also be released earlier in the US than the UK, particularly for TV series; eg Series 1 of Heroes was released in 2007, the UK got part 1 in October & part 2 in December, whereas the complete set was released in the US in August.
If you have any further questions regarding region encoding,
or need assistance finding an 'unlock' code for your player,
