Watch Grading System
Please bear in mind that the majority of our watches are pre owned (were sold to a retail customer) and have been worn.
We always try to be conservative when grading pre owned watches as we would much prefer you to be pleasantly surprised when you receive your watch rather than disappointed
BNIB (Brand New in Box)
A brand new watch that has never been worn or sold to a retail customer in factory condition complete with all tags, protective coverings, box, papers etc the same as if supplied by a high street jeweller.
A watch which has been used as a display item. Most have been displayed on stands which can cause slight bending or wear to straps. They will likely have been handled by customers so have minor handling marks (normally only visible under close inspection) which will be stated in the listing. These watches are normally supplied without box, papers or instruction booklet
LNIB (Like New in Box)
A pre owned watch that has been worn but is in perfect condition complete with factory boxes, tags and documentation although protective plastic coverings may be missing. Warranty papers will be stamped to establish the authenticity and age of the watch
A pre owned watch in almost perfect condition. Signs of use only visible under close inspection. Maybe a watch in 'LNIB' condition but lacking factory box(es) and documentation
Shows very light signs of wear. Faint scratches may be present on the case, bezel, bracelet and buckle visible to the naked eye. The strap may show signs of light use, bent or slightly creased. Bracelet may have been resized. Working perfectly and keeping good time. Ready to wear
Evidence of use is visible to the naked eye. Light scratches but more numerous than 'Near Mint'. No dents or dinks to the case but strap or bracelet shows signs of use. Running and keeping good time
Shows what could be described as normal use by a careful owner. Scratches evident but no dents or dinks. Strap or bracelet shows obvious signs of use. Running and keeping time although if mechanical may require minor regulation
Obvious signs of use, case may have some deep scratches, dinks or dents. Strap or bracelet showing wear. Running and wearable but if mechanical could gain or lose several minutes per day
Well used could even be considered the worse for wear. Deep scratches, dinks or dents evident. Well worn strap or bracelet that may benefit from replacement. A mechanical watch of this grade may run erratically or be in need of a service
Shows abuse and will need service or restoration. May have serious cosmetic flaws, possible parts damaged or missing and may not run. Not considered scrap but certainly needs work before use. A possible fixer upper for dealers or enthusiasts.
Could be missing parts, rusted, corroded or in very poor cosmetic condition. May be 'head only' without strap or bracelet. May or may not be worth restoring but could provide useful parts
Some watches may be described as + or - (for example GOOD +) where the watch falls into a GOOD category for condition but has recently been serviced. Full details will be outlined in the detailed listing.
