The Electric Mountain Bike Specialists
Here at EXTREME, we think electric-mountain bikes are the best things since… well, mountain bikes. Whether it’s hitting the trails, thrashing your local bike park, or just being the trusty steed for your daily commute, you won’t find anything better than an EXTREME Electric mountain bike.
Here at EXTREME, we want to make electric-mountain biking accessible and affordable.
How do we do that?
We source proper mountain bikes and convert them to the best LEGAL pedal-assist electric-mountain bikes around, at a price that cannot be beaten.
What do you mean by proper?
We make sure that even our entry level electric-mountain bikes are equipped with forks and brakes (hydraulic disc) that can handle off-road terrain and the worst of our infamous British roads.
We then kit them out with a 250w BAFANG 8Fun BBS01 mid-drive motor and a quality 36v 15AH lithium bottle battery that will get you maximum mileage for your charge.
Why use a mid-drive motor? Simple – Performance.
Mid-Drive Motors are known for higher performance and torque when compared to a similar-powered (but inferior) Traditional Hub Motor, ( mounted in the front or rear wheel) 0. One of the key reasons for that is because the mid-drive motor drives the crank (the big chain ring), instead of the wheel itself. This increases the (leg) power and allows it to better take advantage of the bike’s existing gears. The best way to visualise this is to imagine you are pedalling and approaching a steep hill. As you change the gears to make it easier for you to pedal, this enables a mid-drive motor to deliver extra power (pedal-assist) more efficiently, improving your ride and increasing the battery range as a result.
Why a 250w motor and not something more powerful?
- It’s the LAW
- Extended battery life
- Do you want an electric bike or a motorbike?
By law, when an electric-bike exceeds 15.5mph the electric motor must stop providing power to the bike. This is what defines an electric-bike and allows it to be classified apart from other powered vehicles like mopeds. As a result, 250w electric-bikes remain classified as pedal cycles, which means they don’t have to be registered, insured or taxed. In short, it’s what stops them being motorbikes.
Other electric-bike sellers are pedalling higher powered electric-bikes (pun intended),with as much as 1000W motors and are not making it clear that you cannot use them on U.K.roads to go to work on, or anywhere in the UK where there is public access, (on or off-road),as it is against the Law.
They also won’t tell you that an increase in power, means a dramatically decreased battery life.
These are electric-mountain bikes, so let’s get our pedal on, go further and get there a bit quicker.
