FIELD COIL

ROTOR

BRUSHES

MOTOR SHIELD

The FIELD COIL (also known as stator) is the stationary part of the Marklin HO motor.  It has two different coil windings, one wrapped clockwise, the other wrapped counter-clockwise.  Which winding gets used is what determines forward or reverse direction.   The windings sometimes go bad, especially if it has overheated.  We carry about 7 different field coil part numbers in NEW condition.

The ROTOR (also known as armature) is the rotating part of the Marklin HO motor.  It is also the “heart” of the motor.  The windings sometimes go bad, but what is more common is that the commutator surface (that the brushes press against) become pitted due to current arcing. We carry about 7 different rotor part numbers in NEW condition.

The BRUSHES are a normally wearable item.  Some are carbon, others are copper mesh wire, some packages use one of each.  We carry 4 different brush part numbers in NEW condition.  Brushes will get shorter as run time increases; this is normal.

The brushes are held in place by the “MOTOR SHIELD”  (also known as brush holder.)  It is important to replace the brush holder if the bearing for the rotor has become worn or if the springs that push on the brushes are damaged.  Correct spring pressure is VERY important. We carry about 7 different brush holder part numbers in NEW condition.

Note:  Recently, Marklin changed their part numbers from 5 digits (such as 60030) to 6 digits (such as 600300) by adding a trailing zero.  Either number will get you the same part.
