RICE HUSKS IN COMPOST
Good drainage is essential in any growing media. Perlite is often used, but it’s expensive and non-organic. Heat-treated (or par-boiled) rice husks are now universally used as an organic substitute for Perlite. They are also silica rich. The silica has been shown to improve the strength of flower stems and leaves by increasing cell production. Although common in the USA and Japan, we do not know of any other compost in the UK using rice husks.

CONTAINER COMPOST
The pH value of a soil is often overlooked by gardeners. The pH of soil determines the ability of the plant to draw nutrients, thus affecting the final crop. pH adjustment is often made chemically. But our specific purpose composts use organic rice husk ash to adjust pH. Rice husk ash has a very high pH, so when mixed incrementally into our cocopeat based compost, the pH rises to the level desired by the type of plants depicted on the label. So whilst our composts may look the same, the components are different, as required by the species.
CHARCOAL IN COMPOST
Whilst opinions differ as to the many benefits of adding charcoal to growing media, it’s widely accepted to be good. We use it in many of our mixes, including orchid compost. Unlike some charcoal that is made from recycled furniture, which may have had a previous life as a tree, our charcoal is made from the shell of coconuts. Coconuts are a renewable resource and crop year round.
