Which size of Braid do I actually need?

Confused by the diferent types that they've made over the years? With only a few very rare exceptions, it basically boils down to just three different types. That's not bad over a span of 50 years.

NEW ITEM!

They've been a while coming, but we have a new product out to make life easier still for your Hi-Spec Braids.

Our new Track-Cleaner rubbers are designed to polish the inside of your slot whilst cleaning the carbon-depostits that cause poor contact from the surface of your rails.

You can buy them in either 'Soft' or 'Medium' (slightly more aggressive) grades, depending on the state of your track!

TYPE 1:    20mm Braids

This braid, together with the old 'standard' slot-guide has been Scalextric's longest production power pick-up system. It was used on most cars from the early 1960's to the very late 80's, some of which, I seem to remember, may have carried over into the 1990's.

It is easily idenfied, as the motor leads exit the front end of the chassis, usually just forward of the front axle. A pair of brass eyelets (sometimes referred to as 'collets') on the ends of the leads trap the braids in their slots at the leading edge of the slot-guide.

The nearside (white) motor lead can be seen quite clearly on this close-up of the  C.122, my 1970's Mini 1275GT Clubman.

TYPE 2:    27mm Braids

The old standard slot guide had been a reliable piece of kit, but braid-changing could be rather fiddly, especially if you had blunt finger-ends!

This braid, together with the new 'Easy-fit' slot-guide was introduced circa 1990 and continues, in slightly modified form, as the 'Sport' guide familiar to the newer user.

The motor leads on these remain inside the chassis, attaching to the inboard fittings of a pair of plates which have an exposed face beneath the chassis. The longer braids then bend over the top face of the guide and contact the plates as it pivots.

Here you can see the braids' trapped ends, just visible in their slot, behind the free trailing ones.

(These braids are also suitable for Micro-Scalextric cars)

TYPE 3:    40mm Braids

Way back in the 1980's Scalextric produced some Stock-Cars with a commutator-like device on the pivot post of their slot guide and both ends of the braid tucked in, which allowed them to spin round and run in the reverse direction without reversing polarity to the track. They also made some Nissan Monster pick-up trucks around the same time, which may have used them, my memory's a bit hazy regards them!

Now, of course, most people asscociate them with the Drift-Cars, as they have been quite a hit recently. One of the Nissans is shown here, but there is quite a catalogue of 360-degree spinners out there now!

Thanks go out to Phil, from Lanark, for helping test the braids and supplying me with the picture, and also to Mark and his son, James, in Greenhithe!

I hope I've kept you entertained, as well as informed, and that you've enjoyed reading my copy and graphics as much as I did creating it.

Designing has been half my life (the part that bought the bread!) and you can't stop just because you get old, but the real reward is if you like it too.

Thanks for reading down this far!
Yours,

Dave
