FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I HAVE TO PAY ANY FURTHER FEES OR CHARGES TO GET THE REGISTRATION TRANSFERRED TO MY VEHICLE?

NO - CHERISHEDMARKSUK's fully inclusive pricing plan means that you will pay no further DVLA or transfer charges to get the registration onto your vehicle.

Customers who chose to retain the registration on its Retention Certificate for over 12 months from purchase will incur DVLA's £25 retention fee, meaning every 12 months you keep the registration on its certificate, you will need to apply to the DVLA to retain the rights of ownership and pay their £25 charge

DO I GET THE ACRYLIC REGISTRATION PLATES AS PART OF THE TRANSACTION?

NO - CHERISHEDMARKSUK do not supply the actual plates to affix to your vehicle as part of the transaction.  However, as you would expect, we have negotiated exceptional discounts with acrylic registration plate supplier SELECT-A-PLATE, and on completion of the transaction with us, we will supply you with details of SELECT-A-PLATEs service and put you in touch with their Sales Team, so that you can discuss your requirements directly.  Our exclusive agreement with SELECT-A-PLATE means your plates will cost you as little as £15.00 per pair (depending on your requirements)

WHAT IS THE DVLA RETENTION SCHEME?

The retention scheme is where a registration mark is held on a certificate of entitlement. CHERISHEDMARKSUK supply your registration on the certificate, allowing you to chose the vehicle and time of transfer at your leisure.  The certificate then allows the owner to transfer the registration to your vehicle at your convenience.

Only registrations registered in Great Britain are eligible for this scheme. Registrations from Northern Ireland cannot be put onto retention directly. They must first be registered in England, which will incur further costs.

All registrations supplied by us come retained on a Certificate of Entitlement. All you have to do is visit your DVLA Local Office and transfer the registration onto your vehicle, or retain the registration on its certificate and pay the DVLA's Retention fee every 12 months.

Customers in Northern Ireland should be aware that registrations supplied on a Certificate of Entitlement by CHERISHEDMARKSUK normally mean that the registration will first need to be registered on a vehicle in Great Britian BEFORE this can be transferred to a vehicle registered in Northern Ireland.

CHERISHEDMARKSUK cannot be held responsible for any purchase which cannot be directly transferred onto the purchasers vehicle

CAN I ALTER THE LOOK OF THE REGISTRATION ON MY ACTUAL NUMBER PLATE ON MY VEHICLE?

CHERISHEDMARKSUK and the Registration Industry as a whole fully recognise that some Letters/Numbers similar to letters or words,

i.e. 8 = B, 5 = S, 17 = N, etc, however it is completely illegal to mis-represent the characters in any way.

If stopped by a Police Officer, you could be liable for a fine of up to £1000 or requested to change your registration plates for legal ones!

CHERISHEDMARKSUK do not advocate the manipulation or mis-representation of a registration number on your registration plate - if you chose to do this it is entirely your own responsibility.  All pictures and images shown on CHERISHEDMARKSUK's Auction listings are purely for illustrative purposes only!

WILL I HAVE TO PAY EXPENSIVE POSTAGE COSTS TO ENSURE MY CERTIFICATE ARRIVES IN THE POST?

CHERISHEDMARKSUK DO NOT CHARGE you for postage costs for your Certificate of Entitlement - all costs are included in the price we quote.

HOW LONG WILL THE TRANSFER PROCESS TAKE?

Transfer times vary depending on the time of year and other factors - i.e. Christmas is a particularly busy time for the purchase of registrations as gifts.

Registrations that are held on Retention - meaning the only action required is to add your name to the Certificate of Entitlement - usually take between 3 to 15 working days.

The principle is that the quicker you pay, the quicker the transfer will take, however please realise that the DVLA are in control of the process and not CHERISHEDMARKSUK!!

Our service commitment to you means we will keep you informed of how the transfer is progressing, however we realise that the purchase of your dream personal registration is an exciting time - but please be patient as there is nothing we can do to speed up the process!!

THE REGISTRATION IS A GIFT FOR SOMEONE ELSE - HOW CAN I KEEP THE SECRET?

Upon purchase of your registration, BE SURE to let us know it is a gift and we will send the documents for your attention, or to another family members address.

We always use plain envelopes to send out documentation, and if necessary will send the documents to an alternative address for you, if you supply one, so that the lucky person doesn't find out until you decide to tell them!

WHAT INFORMATION DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO TRANSFER OWNERSHIP?

When making your purchase, you will be asked for the 'nominee' name that will appear on the Certificate of Entitlement.

The nominee name is the name of the person who the Registration is for, and this name MUST match the name as it appears on the Vehicle's V5 to which the Registration will be transferred to.

For example, if the vehicle V5 is registered in the name of:

MRS SUSAN JOHNSON

the nominee name you supply to us must read exactly the same as this.

If the V5 reads:

MRS S JOHNSON

Again you should supply this information.

CHERISHEDMARKSUK cannot be held responsible for any purchaser incurring additional fees payable to the DVLA if the name on the Certificate of Entitlement DOES NOT MATCH the V5 name.

If you are purchasing as an investment OR for a son or daughter who is under 18, then we can simply register the plate in your name and when the time comes for you to transfer the registration onto their car - or you sell the registration - the DVLA charge a nominal fee of £25 to change the details on the Certificate.

I CANNOT MAKE MY VEHICLE APPEAR YOUNGER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS - WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

This means you can't use a personal registration number to make a vehicle look newer than it is, meaning you cannot put a Y prefix plate onto a vehicle registered before 2001, i.e. you cannot transfer this plate onto a V registration car, or any car registered before V.

WHAT IS A PREFIX REGISTRATION?

Prefix registrations contain the year identifier at the beginning of a registration, i.e. C 123 MUK  in this example C is the prefix letter

WHAT IS A PREFIX REGISTRATION?

Suffix registrations contain the year identifier at the end of a registration, i.e. CMU 123 K  in this example K is the suffix letter

WHAT IS A CURRENT REGISTRATION?

Current style registrations consist of two letters, a two-figure age identifier and finally three letters, i.e.
CM 02 UKS OR CM 51 UKS

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL RULES FOR MOTORCYCLES OR MOPEDS?

No - Motorcycles and mopeds can participate freely in the registration transfer scheme.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY MEANT BY A REGISTRATION NUMBER?

A registration number is a unique identifier for a vehicle - primarily for taxation and law enforcement purposes.

It is assigned to the vehicle, rather than its keeper, and unless it is transferred or retained the registration number normally remains with the vehicle until it is broken up, destroyed or sent permanently out of the country.

Registration numbers are not items of property in their own right.

They are assigned, and may be withdrawn, by the Secretary of State as part of the basic registration and licensing process, which is required by law.
An individual can acquire the entitlement to a registration number when he or she becomes the registered keeper of the vehicle which carries the number, or by purchasing a registration through CMUK.

Whichever method of acquisition is used, when the vehicle changes hands, entitlement to its registration number will automatically pass with the vehicle to the new keeper UNLESS use is made of the special facilities which have been designed to allow motorists to acquire and retain particular registration numbers: namely, the Cherished Transfer, Retention and Sale of Marks schemes.
