CD Grading Guidelines
Effective for all CD's.
Ebay's grading is vague and refers more to the jewel case than the CD itself. Most of the time I grade CDs visually, but will play them if I have any concerns about their condition. I try to be conservative in my grading and point out any flaws in my listings so that you won't be disappointed. If you are please return it for a full refund.
In theory, a compact disc should always play-grade in at least Like New condition. And even the condition of generic jewel boxes and trays aren't that important as they can be easily replaced. Unless the CD came in special packaging (box, gatefold cover, digipak, colored plastic, etc.), the two most important areas are its label and its inserts (booklet and tray inlay card).
I welcome your questions about the condition of any CD that I'm selling on eBay or about these guidelines. My goal is for you to be completely satisfied with your purchase.
Brand New
A brand new, unused, unopened & undamaged CD in perfect condition. There are no holes or cuts in the barcode or jewel case unless specified. The original packaging and all materials are included and in almost brand new condition.
Many Imported CDs are distributed from the original manufacturer without shrink wrap. I may list these as Brand New with an appropriate comment as "Unsealed".
Like New
CD is mirror-like with no visible scuffs or scratches.
It could have a slight factory mark which some new cd's have even if you open them from the shrinkwrap.
Box / Booklet / Digipak and inserts have no creases, folds, seam splits, dents or other noticeable similar defects.
Jewel case may have some very light wear but no significant scuff marks or scratching, and no cracks or holes. Again jewel cases are cheap and not as important in my grading.
Very Good
A Very Good CD will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.
CD surface may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches but plays through without skipping.
Box / Booklet / Digipak and inserts may have slight signs of wear and may be marred by a cut-out hole indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.
Jewel case will have normal wear, including some scratches and scuff marks, possibly a small crack or a cut-out drill hole.
A Very Good CD will have some, but not all of these defects.
Most CDs that I sell on eBay fall into the Very Good category.
Good
Good does not mean Bad! A CD in Good condition will play through without skipping but it may have significant surface scratching or scuff marks. I usually play all cd's thru if they are marked good to make sure they don't skip.
Box / Digipak / Inserts will have creases, seam splits or tears. Tape, writing or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
The jewel case may have significant scuffs, scratches or cracks.
Acceptable
CD has significant surface markings, scratches, scuff marks etc. that may cause skipping. The good news is all cd's can be resurfaced. I send many out and they come back looking like new. It only cost about $3.00
Booklet / Digipack and inserts are considerably worn; some of the original inserts may be missing.
The jewel case badly scratched, scuffed, cracked, broken or missing. |
