How to use our percussion instruments (Pre-school, school and music groups)

There are infinite possibilities for using our percussion instruments to teach children about music, and of course exactly what you do depends on the age of children you are working with. We hope that some of these ideas will be helpful in getting you started.

  • Young children will just enjoy playing the percussion instruments. Encourage them to try playing loudly then softly, and fast then slow.
  • Use songs where the children need to wait and play in the correct places. 'The Music Man' is a simple example, where children play in the section that names their instrument. 'Humpty Dumpty' is a slightly more complicated example, where the instruments can all make a loud crash to show Humpty's fall, and then imitate galloping horse sounds for all the King's horses.
  • Use pre-recorded music for the children to beat time to. Try and vary the speed and beat so that the children have to listen carefully, and exercise different levels of control over their percussion instruments.
  • Encourage children to get used to watching the conductor by playing a game where they can only play their percussion instrument when the conductor points to them. With older children you can add gestures for louder/softer and faster/slower.
  • Use percussion instruments to add dramatic effects to stories, carefully selecting the instruments for their timbre.
  • Use percussion instruments to compose their own simple music - for young children it is often helpful to use some spoken links as cues, but older children will be able to hold a piece together by looking at each other. Atmospheric pieces work particularly well.
  • Whatever the age of the children, they can get a more accurate response from simple percussion instruments than from harder pitched instruments. This increases their musical confidence.
  • Children may have their own ideas, so try these out too and see how they work!
  • These percussion sets are made up of musical instruments, not toys. Young children should not use them in unsupervised situations.
