| | | Young children will just enjoy playing the percussion instruments. Encourage them to try playing loudly then softly, and fast then slow.
Use songs where the children need to wait and play in the correct places. 'The Music Man' is a simple example, where children play in the section that names their instrument. 'Humpty Dumpty' is a slightly more complicated example, where the instruments can all make a loud crash to show Humpty's fall, and then imitate galloping horse sounds for all the King's horses.
Use pre-recorded music for the children to beat time to. Try and vary the speed and beat so that the children have to listen carefully, and exercise different levels of control over their percussion instruments.
Encourage children to get used to watching the conductor by playing a game where they can only play their percussion instrument when the conductor points to them. With older children you can add gestures for louder/softer and faster/slower. | | | | | |
