The golden rule is: CUT YOUR PATTERN BEFORE BUYING YOUR LEATHER.
Most leather comes from a sheepskin, cowhide or pigskin that is shaped irregularly and not all of it is suitable for use. The smaller your pattern pieces, the better use you can make of a skin.
If you are experienced in working with fabric you can refer to the chart below for approximate guidelines for different widths of fabric. Roughly, a single skin of 18 square feet = 1 yard of 54 inch fabric. As skins get smaller you need to allow more square footage to obtain the equivalent of one yard. If you need very large cuttings you may need additional skins.
• Each yard of 54" fabric requires a 18 square foot skin.
• Each yard of 50" fabric requires a 16 square foot skin.
• Each yard of 36" fabric requires a 12 square foot skin.
If you are not experienced at using different fabrics you can calculate how much leather you will need in the following way. Calculate the number of square feet you want to cover. By the time you are done cutting the hide roughly 20-30% will not be useable. You must take this into account when ordering the leather, so you need to add 20-30% (depending on the size of skins you are working with) to the number of square feet you originally calculated. That is approximately how many square feet of leather you will need to order.
For garments made from skins of 7 square feet or less you may need to cut your pattern to fit the particular skin size.
Please remember - this is not an exact science!!!
