Explaining book condition and description used by Booksellers
As the popular marketplaces have bought used books to the masses over the past few years the terminology used by booksellers to describe the condition of books has simplified. The streamlined system in use today and by The Discount Book Market Place is as follows:
New: A Brand new, unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact, pages are pristine. The book is suitable for a gift.
Like New: An apparently unused copy copy in perfect condition.
Very Good: A copy that has been read but is still in excellent condition. Pages are intact, clean, contain no underlining, highlighting or notes.
Good: A good reading copy, clean, with all pages intact and dust jacket present (if issued). Spine may show some wear, and pages may show some limited notes and highlighting.
Acceptable: A usable copy. All pages are intact, but the dust jacket may be missing. Pages may include considerable notes or highlighting, but the text will not be obscured
Ex Library Books: These books will have some library stamps or markings (see above picture) but otherwise condition will be described as above and identified as Ex Library. Ex Library books often have plastic protected covers which keep the cover/dust cover in excellent condition.
