Deep quilted:
A quilted top layer which has a smoother flatter surface. With the mattress stitched together at the sides. Standard
Micro quilted:
A special stitching which attaches the cover to the top and side layers of fillings. This allows deeper layers of fillings to sink into as the stitching goes deep into the mattress to hold the fillings in place. Micro quilted mattresses can be deep filled and high lofted, usually found in the mid - luxury range.
Jump and tack
A special quilting stitch which produces smooth pillow top areas for luxury comfort. The mattress can be extra deep filled and high lofted as the stitching is clever in the way it is similar to hand tufting. mid - luxury
Hand tufted
Tufted mattresses have a nylon tape which is passed through the mattress at regular intervals and secured each side by cotton/Wool rosettes. This pre-tensions the mattress to give a firmer feel. Deep Filled, high lofted beds are available in the mid - luxury ranges. Standard to luxury
High lofted
Found in mid - luxury end of the ranges. The mattress is extra deep filled and stitched in such a way to bring the fillings high. More fillings to sink into. Mid - luxury
Hand side stitched
Can be found in hand crafted mattresses and top end of the market mattresses. This is a highly skilled and very labour intensive process. Both the fillings and springs are attached to the side panels for increased stability, strength and comfort. The mattress will last a lot longer if hand side stitched. Luxury
Inside the mattress
Pocket spring mattress: Smaller springs contained within their own individual pockets so they work independently to support and mould to your body shape. These are perfect for couples of different weights to prevent 'roll together'.
No roll on roll off: Well known from the advertising of the famous hippo and duck brand. There are many other UK manufacturers using there own version who don't need advertising to sell there beds. Our beds using this technology are not mass produced on a production line but hand crafted with care using the finest upholstery and fillings.
A single length of steel, knitted into a series of woven springs to give a higher spring count and a more responsive feel.
Open coil mattress: This is the most commonly used spring system that links all the springs together to spread bodyweight across the surface of the mattress. A border rod or wire around the edge of the mattress helps to keep its shape. From the most economical beds to luxury beds.
Measured in gauges which is basically the thickness and tension of the wire. 12.5 to 13.5 are the best.
Foam mattresses
Visco-elastic mattress: Non-sprung, these mattresses are made from an open cell, breathable material that's sensitive to temperature. Body heat helps to mould the material to your contours, relieving pressure points and promoting circulation. These are hypo-allergenic with anti-microbial properties.
Our memory foam mattresses are all made in the Uk, using only foam from the Uk. This is especially important as most imports contain chemicals that are very bad news as they are cheaply made. If a mattress is stated as made in the UK it may still be memory foam imported from abroad.
Memory foam mattresses can be found with a variety of supports including springs and high density rebound foam.
Latex mattress: Hypo-allergenic and conforms to your body's contours. It's breathable so you won't overheat and is resilient providing excellent durability. Our latex mattresses are hypo-allergenic, anti-bacterial and anti-dustmite.
High density/high resilience foam: This is a special foam that is not memory foam as it isn't temperature sensitive. It is very clever and supports and conforms to your shape providing comfort and support. Anti bacterial, hypo-allergenic and anti-dustmite.
Should I buy a full divan bed or new mattress
It is possible to place a new mattress upon your existing base although not recommened. If you do please ensure your base is either platform top or slatted and the surface is completely flat with no weak spots or sagging.
You should never place a new mattress upon an old sprung base. Although it may look in good condition, the internal springs will have worn in the same predominant sleeping areas as the previous old mattress. Which means the new mattress will sink and follow the contours of the worn areas. This will not only permanently damage the new mattress, but also give you an uncomfortable sleeping unit and will invalidate the guarantee.
A new full divan base is more economical in the long run and does not cost much more than a mattress.
The divan is still the most popular style of base in the UK. With a variety of upholstery to match the mattress or we can offer many of our divans with a suede or leather effect base.
A suede or leather effect base with a matching headboard can be a more economical compromise than purchasing a suede bedstead and mattress independantly. With the added benefit of storage drawers if required.
Sprung base is the most luxurious, featuring a complete spring unit which acts as a giant shock absorber and helps to prolong the life of the mattress.
Platform base combines a wooden frame with a rigid upper panel to create a firm surface. |
