General Interest

Aromatherapy can be very helpful during pregnancy and labor, but only under qualified guidance: if you are pregnant, you are strongly advised to consult a qualified Aromatherapist or contact us on 08707 462729.

Some oils are stimulants, which can sometimes affect people suffering from epilepsy; sufferers should seek medical advice before using essential oils.

For babies and small children, use essential oils in extra-diluted quantities. Keep bottles out of the reach of small children.

Unless specifically indicated, do not apply undiluted oils directly onto the skin, as they can cause irritation. For the same reason, it is advisable to give yourself a patch test on a small area of skin when using your own blend.

Note that certain drugs, stress and the menstrual cycle can also affect your sensitivity. Keep oils away from the eyes, and don't rub your eyes after handling essential oils. If you should get any oil in your eyes, wash the eye out with plenty of fresh water and seek medical advice if necessary. Essential oils are flammable; so do not put them on or near a naked flame except in a proper burner. Some oils are solvents and may damage certain plastics or polished wood surfaces.

Never take oils by mouth.

Do not, unless otherwise advised by an expert, apply undiluted oils to the skin.

Do not use essential oils as a food flavoring, and do not take essential oils internally.

All essential oils, even when diluted, will cause stinging if they get into the eyes. If this happens when using essential oils in a bath, flush the eyes with CLEAN, WARM WATER.

If undiluted oil is splashed in the eyes

Immediately flush the eyes with CLEAN WARM WATER or FULL-FAT MILK. If this does not alleviate the stinging and irritation, then seek MEDICAL ASSISTANCE.

Undiluted oil on your fingers

Should be removed by gently scrubbing with a strong solution of washing-up liquid. Do not rub your eyes if you have essential oil on your fingers. Oils that tend to persist on the fingers for a long time and can cause eye irritation are Cinnamon and Peppermint.

Undiluted oils on other parts of the body

Should be removed by washing with warm soapy water. Dry the area thoroughly, and apply hand cream, a medicated cream, or, if nothing else is available, a small amount of butter or margarine.

Accidental excess consumption of essential oils

SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IMMEDIATELY

General Precautions

Essential oils are highly concentrated, and the user should be aware that inappropriate use can cause undesirable side effects. The common methods of utilizing essential oils are; inhalation as room fragrances; dilution in a bath; or dilution in a carrier oil, such as almond oil, for massage. Only a medical advisor should consider alternative means.

Keep essential oils out of the reach of children.

Many Homeopathic practitioners use Katseye Blends in addition to their remedies. However, if you are taking homeopathic remedies, check with your practitioner before using essential oils, as it is believed that some essential oils can antidote the effects of some homeopathic medicines.

If you suffer from skin or other allergies, use the oils very carefully, and patch test before using - apply one drop of the oil you propose to use to the gauze of a plaster and put the plaster on a discreet part of your body (fore-arm is good) and leave over a couple of hours. If no reaction, you should be safe to use the oil/blend.

If you have an allergic reaction to perfume, you are likely also to be allergic to some essential oils. In this case, seek some other gentle form of therapy, such as homeopathy or the Bach Flower Remedies.

If in any doubt at all, call us on 08707 462729 before embarking on any treatment – always err on the side of safety. Having looked at safety, let us now begin to look at the blends themselves.
