Chakras are energy centres located within the body which receive and express life force energy. They are perceived as spinning discs of light in a line from the base of the spine to just above the top of the head. The chakras are self regulating, opening and closing as required, but occasionally they can become blocked or misaligned - when this happens our physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health suffers. The energy from crystals with corresponding colours to that of the affected chakra can be used to help to realign them. The 7 main chakras are briefly explained below:
ROOT CHAKRA
The first chakra is called Muladhara, which means root or base, and is responsible for the energy of survival - the ability to create a contact that includes fusion. This chakra links a spiritual capacity with a physical expression of that capacity.This chakra is red and is situated at the base of the spine. When this chakra is balanced you feel grounded, stable and comfortable within your own body. Signs that it may be unbalanced include a suppressed immune system, back pain and general stubborness. Suitable crystals for this area include garnet, smokey quartz and black tourmaline.
SACRAL CHAKRA
This orange chakra is called Svadhisthana and is responsible for desire, pleasure, sexuality and biological continuity. It does not only mean biologically, but is also responsible for controlling creativity, training, self realization, and commitment to goals and paths. It is located in the lower part of the abdomen under the navel. When balanced it produces feelings of happiness, creativity and friendliness. Signs that it is blocked include kidney problems, over sensitivity and low self esteem. Crystals that work well with the sacral chakra include citrine, amber and carnelian.
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
Manipura, which means the temple of the diamond, is responsible for ego and human development. This is the source of emotions and sensations, this is where self will is controlled, almost where the human 'digests' the outside world and takes it on board in the form of personal feelings. It is seen as a yellow chakra and is between the abdomen and the heart. When it is aligned it allows us to acomplish that which we want and to relax and enjoy our accomplishments. We are more disciplined and able to organise ourselves. When it is not functioning correctly we can become depressed, overwhelmed and under achieving. Suitable crystals to use here would include tigers eye, rutilated quartz and light citrine.
HEART CHAKRA
This is known as Anhata, or everbeating drum. The accepted colour for this chakra is green for the physical aspect and pink for the emotional. This is the centre chakra with 3 above and 3 below it and is located behind the heart. This chakra is concerned with relationships of all kind and a good balance here results in a person who is empathetic, open and content. When it is out of line we can become critical, cold and demanding. Good crystals for the heart chakra therefore are peridot, rose quartz, aventurine and rhodocrosite.
THROAT CHAKRA
Vishuddha is full of purity. It is traditionally seen as blue and is situated at the base of the neck. When this chakra is balanced there is a connection between the individual and the supreme force and we become aware of the laws of creation, and become able to reach purity and maintain spiritual serenity in any situation. It controls communication on all levels and allows self expression and creativity. Indications that it may be blocked include throat infections, a stiff neck and tension headaches. Blue lace agate, celestite, lapiz and turquoise all work well here.
THE BROW CHAKRA
This is the Ajana chakra and it opens a gate to the subconscious or intuition. It is located on the forehead just above and betweeen the eyebrows and is indigo. It controls intuition, guidance and perception. It works closely with the crown chakra and any misalignment here is usually reflected in the crown chakra too. Suitable crystals to use here include kyanite, lapiz and indigo flourite.
CROWN CHAKRA
The lotus flower of a thousand petals, known as Sahasharta or Sahasrara is responsible for supreme awareness, the aquisition of higher wisdom, the identification of the universe and God. This is a supremely spiritual chakra. It is a beautiful violet / purple chakra located just above the top of the head. It balances the chakra system as a whole and is our foundation of our spiritual body. It is our connection to the universe. It allows us to be more intuitive and in touch with what we are doing. When it is unbalanced the whole chakra system suffers. Good crystals to think about here are amethyst, milky quartz and clear quartz.
